Azpeitia (Urola Erdia)
The Sanctuary of Loyola, located next to the Tower-House of the Loyola family, birthplace of Saint Ignatius, is the start of our tour. The Holy Home is surrounded by a marvelous architecture dating to the 17th and 18th centuries. It is baroque in style and has a circular floor plan presided by a majestic dome and graceful lantern, designed by the Italian architect, Carlo Fontana, who was a disciple of Bernini and fashioned this project as a miniature Vatican. This gem was realized by Basque master builders Zaldua, Lecuna and Ignacio Ibero.
" Loyola..... a witness and participant in the medieval Basque wars of the banderizos and later the wars of the Parientes Mayores against the city states,.....
The transformation of the Tower-House into a Sanctuary took place at the peak of splendor in Loyola, in particular the first half of the 18th century and late 19th century."
