Virgin of Aránzazu

It is said that Rodrigo de Baltzategi, a shepherd from Uribarri looking for his goats in this area, found the Virgin, in the year of 1468. According to this tradition, the 36 cm stone image was left on a Hawthorne bush. The image, which appears crowned and holding the Baby Jesus, belongs to the "Andra Maria" typology. Its style is Late Romanesque or transition.

In fact, from those early dates, the peoples of Oñati and Arrasate started to mobilise and organise pilgrimages to this unique site. From 1501, Franciscans have Papal leave to remain at Arantzazu, and so they have, for over 500 years.

Arantzazu has evolved during this time, and has a very rich spiritual and cultural history.
