Nestled high on a small promontory, the Santuario de Santa María de Dorleta (Holy Mary of Dorleta Sanctuary) was built after the castle that was placed as a lookout and for the defence of the life and existing economy of the salt spring.
The Virgin of Dorleta was crowned on October 25, 1958, and is currently the Universal Patron Saint of cyclists. Moved by their devotion, many cyclists, both amateur and professional, have donated their cycling maillots to the Virgin in gratitude. Inside the Sanctuary, visitors can also see the maillots of several famous professional cyclists.
The current aspect of the Sanctuary is like that of the 12th century, but due to the reconstructions that it has seen throughout history, it is a mix of styles, including some medieval reliefs. The current image of the Virgin is a Gothic polychrome statue that dates from the 13th and 14th centuries, in which Mother and Child are shown in an attitude of mutual contemplation.
